Engineered timber flooring is typically more prone to scratches and scuffs than laminate and bamboo which means it needs more maintenance than other flooring types. And once the top layer of the laminate is damaged or worn it can t be sanded down and refinished like engineered and solid wood flooring. Laminate is also much thinner than engineered wood averaging around 12mm whereas engineered wood tends to be thicker like hardwoods. The base is fiberboard with a photographic image layer bonded over the top.
Laminate flooring products can feel somewhat hollow underfoot when compared to the wood floors they are supposed to mimic. Laminate flooring and engineered hardwood are sometimes confused with each other because they can look similar. Then a transparent wear layer is applied to protect the surface.
However despite similar appearances there are key differences between them. Laminate flooring and engineered hardwood floors are very similar and often get confused but there are some key differences to take into consideration when comparing the two floors. The main difference between the two floors is that engineered hardwood floors have an actual hardwood surface but structurally they are very similar to a laminate.
Engineered wood flooring laminate flooring is a fully man made material that consists of several layers. Engineered wood contains a slice of natural wood on top while laminate uses a photographic layer that is coated with a protective layer. Laminate can look like fake when compared to engineered wood which is usually indistinguishable from solid hardwood.
The primary advantage engineered wood has over laminate is that it is a much more convincing replica of real hardwood flooring. Most importantly engineered wood contains a top layer of solid wood while laminate uses a photographic layer coated with a wear layer to achieve the wood look surface. But when combined with either foam or felt underlayment laminate flooring will be quieter softer and more comfortable to walk on.
But on the flip side engineered wood offers greater durability and a more realistic look as well as feel. As it tends to provide more durability than laminate you ll find engineered floors offer better value for money in the long term. Engineered wood flooring is more expensive than laminate but it s much more affordable than solid wood.
